Making Historical European Martial Arts make sense

Collections

I.33 Sword and buckler 101

I.33 is the oldest European manuscript on fencing.  Dating to around 1300AD, it describes a system of fencing with sword and buckler.  This collection of blog posts provides a comprehensive guide on how to fence in the i.33 style.

Fencing from first principles (FFFPs)

This is a series of posts on generic fencing topics, such as parrying, timing, tactics, etc.  My aim is to break down a topic in order to truly understand it from 'first principles'.

Liechtenauer's longsword 101

The grandmaster of German longsword fencing, this fencing system dates to the early 15th century.  This is the most commonly practiced longsword system today.  I will write a complete guide to the system and its techniques.

Equipment and safety

Guides on what HEMA equipment you need, prices, etc.  Reviews of products, etc.

Smallsword 101

The smallsword is neglected in HEMA, but it is incredibly fun and methodical, not to mention inexpensive, and safe.  Dating from 1650 onwards, the smallsword replaced the rapier in most parts of Europe.

Bolognese sidesword 101

The sidesword is essentially a single handed arming sword, usually with some hand protection, but can also be considered something of a transition from medieval arming swords and later rapiers. The Bolognese tradition dates from the early to late 1500s and represents an elegant way of fencing.

Rapier 101

The rapier is a long, thrust-centric sword, originating in the mid-1500s and supplanted by the smallsword in most places by 1700.  My aim is to provide a practical teaching aid for Capo Ferro's system of rapier fencing, starting with the single rapier, and progressing on to rapier and dagger.
